Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a protein that is encoded by the GFAP gene in humans. It is a type III intermediate filament (IF) protein that is expressed by numerous cell types of the central nervous system (CNS), including astrocytes and ependymal cells during development.
Major types of intermediate filaments are specifically expressed in particular cell types: cytokeratins in epithelial cells, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in glial cells, desmin in skeletal, visceral, and certain vascular smooth muscle cells, vimentin in cells of mesenchymal origin, and neurofilaments in neurons.

GFAP also has highly morphological plasticity because of its quick changes in assembling and polymerizing states in response to environmental challenges. We selected most pathways GFAP participated on our site, such as Jak-STAT signaling pathway, which may be useful for your reference. GFAP is a 50 kDa intracytoplasmic filamentous protein that constitutes a portion of the cytoskeleton in astro-cytes, and it has proved to be the most specific marker for cells of astrocytic origin. In the central rod domain of the molecule, GFAP shares considerable structural homology with the other intermediate filaments (5). Functionally, GFAP GFAP (Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein) is a member of the class III intermediate filament protein family. It is heavily and specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain other astroglia in the central nervous system, in satellite cells, in peripheral ganglia and in non-myelinating Schwann cells in peripheral nerves. GFAP is an intermediate filament (IF) protein that is highly specific for cells of astroglial lineage (Reeves et al., 1989).
