Olaus Magnus, who was born in Linköping, Sweden, in 1490 produced a map of Scandinavia in 1539 titled Carta Marina (images from the map by section are available from the James Ford Bell Library) and the first comprehensive book on Scandinavia in 1555 titled Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus (you can read the whole text in Latin on Projekt Runeberg). Olaus’ travels and experiences in Scandinavia were his primary sources for the map. He used the maps in editions of Ptolemy’s Geographia. He obtained information, and probably charts, from mariners. Posts about Olaus Magnus written by Daniel Brownstein. For much as Verne offered a quickly paced adventure mildly disguised celebration of technological unification of the globe, the retrograde if glorious map masking as an engraved superimposing high-fibre cables on image of the ocean as understood in days gone conceals the clear corporate interests or material technology that underpin the Olaus Magnus, Archbishop of Uppsala, 1490-1557 [carta marina] Romae : tÿpis Antonij Lafreri seguani, 1572.

The probably most well-known work by Olaus Magnus is the Carta Marina (Olaus Magnus himself preferred the title Carta Gothica. This map, measuring 175 x 125 cm, is divided into nine large woodcuts and was printed in Venice 1539. Many of the illustrations in “History of the Nordic Peoples” connect to those of Carta Marina. Olaus Magnus’ Carta marina (1539) was the first detailed map of Scandinavia with any pretensions to accuracy. Olaus Magnus was a Catholic priest in Lutheran Sweden; a man of Renaissance, an attentive observer of the Nature and life around him. Exiled in Germany, he started drawing a large map of the Northern countries on nine woodcut blocks. It was completed in Venice, between 1537 and 1539, after 12 years of work.

The Carta Marina was printed in 1539 and stayed in print for twelve years. The Carta Marina (Latin 'map of the sea'), created by Olaus Magnus in the 16th century, is the earliest map of the Nordic countries that gives details and placenames.
